CPR Re-Certification Frequently Asked Questions

Course Information | Purchase This Course

CAN I RENEW MY CPR CERTIFICATE ON LINE?
Yes, but only if you already have taken a CPR course in the past that required you to demonstrate CPR skills, and your current CPR card has not expired. While many studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of video-based and distance learning courses on skills acquisition, it is still not the accepted practice for the initial acquisition of CPR skills. Therefore, before you can register for this course, you must acknowledge having a valid and current CPR card.

WHAT IF MY CPR CARD HAS EXPIRED?
Then you will need to go back and take a classroom-based course that requires you to demonstrate skills on a mannequin. However, once you have received your new CPR card, let us know and we will place you on our reminder list so that you can be notified to renew your card three months before it expires.

HOW DO YOUR STANDARDS COMPARE WITH OTHER CLASSROOM-BASED TRAINING METHODS?
Our course offers numerous animated presentations, case vignettes, and demonstrations of proper CPR techniques. Participants are required to identify correct procedures and techniques, and are provided with numerous pop quizzes to strengthen learning and retention. Furthermore, our final test consists of twice as many questions as the classroom-based courses, and our passing score is set at a higher level as well.

HOW MUCH TIME DO I GET TO TAKE THE COURSE?
After you pay for the course, you have 14 days to complete the course. If you have not completed the final test by this time, the course expires and you must re-purchase the course if you wish to try again.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I FAIL THE TEST?
A score of 32 of higher is required to pass the 40 question final test. If you do not pass the test on the first try, you will start over at page 1 of the course. You can re-take the test as many times as needed, free of charge, as long as you are within the 14 day time period allowed for this course.

WHO DEVELOPED YOUR COURSE?
The course material was prepared by Sharon Taylor, M.D. She carefully reviewed and incorporated the recommendations of the International Guidelines 2000 Conference on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) with her own experiences as a clinician and CPR instructor. Over a thousand hours of content review, graphic and animation preparation, and research went into the development of this course, and we feel that it reflects the state-of-the-art in online and distance learning education.

WILL MY ORGANIZATION ACCEPT PRODEV'S CPR CERTIFICATE?
Each organization will have to make that determination. However, there is no reason for refusing the CPR certificate from ProDev in terms of meeting or exceeding the standards for CPR re-certification. This course was developed by a certified CPR instructor, and our testing and passing standards are more stringent than currently accepted practices. Furthermore, the ProDev course offers a unique and desperately needed feature not offered by any other CPR training program. Every individual who successfully completes the CPR course receives review exercises every other month for two years at no additional cost.

HOW DO I RECEIVE MY REVIEW EXERCISES?
Once you have completed the course, you will automatically receive an email every other month that provides you with a review of some critical aspect of CPR training. You will have the opportunity to review CPR techniques, obtain updates on changes and improvements in CPR training procedures, and maintain a higher level of readiness and comfort in performing CPR.

IS THERE ANY EVIDENCE THAT DISTANCE LEARNING COURSES WORK IN TRAINING INDIVIDUALS TO PERFORM CPR?
Yes. An article in the Annals of Emergency Medicine (34(6):730, December 1999) titled "Simple CPR: a randomized, controlled trial of video self-instructional cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an African American Church Congregation" by Todd, K. et al, demonstrated that a 34-minute instructional video tape program produced CPR skills in 40 percent of the study group compared to 16 percent of the group that received a 4-hour American Heart Association classroom-based training session. Other studies have also demonstrated that CPR skills can be reinforced without the use of a mannequin [Annals of Emergency Medicine, 1987; 16:1117-1120].

IS PRODEV SPONSORED BY ANY OF THE TRADITIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMS, SUCH AS THE NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL OR AMERICAN RED CROSS?
No. ProDev does not need to be sponsored by any other agency or organization. ProDev is an independent research and educational California corporation that provides continuing education and distance learning courses to a variety of licensed and certified professionals and performs clinical research. Furthermore, ProDev is similar to other conventional training programs in that it is an independent provider that follows the guidelines recommended by the International Guidelines 2000 Conference on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) and the American Heart Association.

ProDev is a nationally accredited provider of continuing education by the American Psychological Association, the Board of Behavioral Sciences, the National Association of Social Workers, the California Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors, and the Board of Registered Nursing. However, there are no continuing education credits provided for the CPR Re-Certification course except through the International Strength and Conditioning Association (ISCA) for 2 continuing education units.
