Clinical, Academic, and Research Experience:

    Dr. Shaffer is an associate professor at San Diego State University, and is Head of the Operational Readiness Research Program for the Naval Health Research Center, San Diego. He is a Commander in the United States Navy and is currently in charge of the U.S. efforts to assist African nations in the prevention of HIV/AIDS. He has been instrumental in developing community based interventions for high risk behaviors in the U.S. Navy and United States Marine Corps, and helped to develop exercise protocols for use at Navy and Marine Corps training centers that have significantly decreased the rates of musculoskeletal injuries. Dr. Shaffer is the Coordinator of the Joint Doctoral Program in Epidemiology at San Diego State University, and is currently the Principal or Associate Investigator on seven research grants.
